Practice

Welcome to Prairie Insight Meditation Community!

Please come to our Day of Mindfulness February 19 from 10:00 to 3:00.

In this traditional Mindfulness, or Insight Meditation, day long retreat, the emphasis will be on deepening into the silence that allows for the awakening of the heart. There will be instructions in mindfulness of sitting and walking and eating;  of the body, the breath, emotions, and thinking.  This will be a day of rest and renewal.

We will be meeting as usual at 716 Queen Street at 10:00 Sunday, February 19, and all are welcome to stay for the day.

There is no fee for this retreat.  It is an opportunity to practice dana or generosity.

Please bring lunch.

Our regular weekly meditation practice group meets every Sunday morning at 10:00 at 716 Queen Street, Saskatoon, the 8th Avenue entrance.

Our community came together almost three years ago with our Sunday morning meditation group to support those who practice Insight, or Mindfulness Meditation and those who are interested in learning.  The morning session begins at 10:00 with a 30-minute guided meditation practice, followed by a 15 to 20 minute talk and discussion related to how we can integrate the teachings and practice into daily life.  Everyone is welcome to stay for tea when  the formal session ends at 11:00.  In our new location, we will also be offering day-long retreats.  The groups are led by Jennifer and occasionally by others who are well established in this practice and teachings. We welcome all who wish to attend.  We are dedicated to making Buddhist teachings and meditation practice accessible to all.

Schedule:

Sunday mornings 10:00 to 11:30

Our first day-long retreat will be October 16, 2011

The Practice: Insight Meditation

Insight Meditation, also known as Mindfulness Meditation and Vipassana, is a simple, direct practice of moment-to-moment investigation of the mind-and-body process. Through on-going, calm, focused awareness, all aspects of life, pleasant and unpleasant, are experienced with increasing openness. Insight into who we are and the world in which we live allows us to relate to life with less fear and with growing wisdom and compassion.

Dana:  The practice of generosity

“Generosity brings happiness at every stage of its expression. We experience joy in forming the intention to be generous. We experience joy in the actual act of giving.  We experience joy in remembering the fact of having given”.  Buddha

In this spiritual tradition, we practice dana, a Pali word meaning generosity or giving. Since the time of the Buddha the teachings have been given freely and, in turn, the community, with heartfelt appreciation for the teachings and spiritual practice, has provided for the monks, nuns, teachers, and monasteries.

Dana received in this community is a contribution to the cost of the meditation space and an opportunity to express gratitude for the teacher and teachings, to develop kindness and compassion, and to cultivate the joy of sharing. It is a real expression of the truth of interdependence.

Reminders:  Please refrain from wearing scent- some of our members are sensitive and/or have allergies to scent.  Please leave your cell phone and any food and water outside the meditation room and come early to get settled before practice begins.
